Prepare an event for October 17th
Learn about extreme poverty and the history of the Day
To prepare next World Day, you can read reference documents on this web site
or articles and testimonies from or about people living in extreme poverty. You can
also read the texts used around the world on this day, such as the text of the
Commemorative Stone at the Trocadero in Paris or the
"I bear witness to you..." Address.
Make the church group or organizations to which you belong
aware of the World Day
Concern for justice and humanity is a fundamental aspect of many religious and
philosophical traditions. On October 17, believers of different faiths and members
of different traditions will be highlighting the existence and the struggle
for survival of the very poor through the rites, thoughts, meditations and prayers
of their communities. For this purpose, the "I bear
witness to you..." Address or the "Universal
Prayer" can be used. Both texts date from October 17, 1987.
Prepare a World Day gathering at an historically
significant site
The very poor are often condemned to instability, to precarious housing which
is often knocked down or destroyed and to work which is usually ignored. The
traces of their history around the world are thus erased and so it is difficult
to give them the recognition they deserve. On October 17, people can gather
at famous or little known place that is significant in the history of the poor
and write a testimony bringing to light what the very poor experienced there.
Help children celebrate the
World Day
Children want everyone to have equal opportunities. With
the support of adults, children can participate in the World Day. They can write
messages and participate in other activities. Discover for instance the children
campaigns of the Tapori
Network.
Think of informing us about your plans!
