" SAY NO TO POVERTY, EVERY GESTURE
COUNTS "
" One day, I was able to raise my head because someone believed
in me. Today, I go towards people who we don't trust and who we don't normally
see. I now accompany those we fear, the unknown, towards the help services. You
have to accept some times to sit next to people who smell bad or that make us
afraid... Have you finished finding nothing but faults with them? They must have
at least one good quality".
People who live in poverty well know that they are useful to others, that
they have some talents. Yet, the value of their contribution is never
recognised. In this year, 2001, proclaimed International Year of Volunteering,
we propose to highlight the gestures made by poor people and families for the
good of everyone. To make their efforts known, to put an end to everything that
inhibits them or makes it impossible for them to act.
In Québec, many people have chosen to march on the 17th of Octobert. Why?
By marching we honour the courage of those who have to march everyday just to
survive. All who refuse poverty will gather side by side with the poorest.
Together we support each other.
We march in silence to honour those who are never heard and are always told
to be silent. To make the public aware of this, and, for once, let the poorest
stand equal with them.
These silent marches are in no way an acceptance of impoverisation, but a
different way to make the public aware of the situation. The marchers will stop
from time to time in places that are significant to the poor, to the history of
the poor and organisations that stand with them.
" Building friendship, changing points of view "
A number of schools are organising a one minute silence, an exhibition or a
march to familiarise their students with the 17th of October. The organisers
will propose that the children do activities to "speak in a different
way " about poverty and to "react in a different way" than
the usual collections of clothes or food.
This year, among many groups of children and primary schools, they will
participatein a vast project on the theme of "Building friendship,
changing points of view". Starting with the true history of
"Valéria", taken from the book "My heart is in this stone
(Fourth World Books). An activity file has been prepared with "Mond’Ami"
and "Animateurs Pastorale".

"Join our hands, unite our hearts, add our
intelligence, refuse poverty, build peace"
The goal for the World Day to Overcome Extreme Poverty is to unite people
from different social horizons so that they can renew their common commitment to
fight poverty and social exclusion.
In this International Year of Volunteering, we have the opportunity to offer
the public an in-depth view of the poeople who, day after day, fight against
poverty and want to build a more united world. We would like to highlight all
these unseen, silent actions, most importantly, those of the poorest themselves.
But we must not forget that everyone's hearts and minds will be needed to build
a more just world.

In Haiti, people often gather together: for greater justice, so that no

as much as they can, take part in cultural events and try to access healthcare…
All these people are unable to attend this day, but ATD Fourth World want
them to feel that this day is for them, especially in this International Year of
Volunteering. So it is at their suggestion that different actions will bee taken
to mark this day. Libraries will show an exhibition this week. A representative
